How to find your own style and own it

Have you ever felt like something or someone was preventing you from dressing the way you really want to? That’s how I felt for many years. There were so many things that I loved, but I would never wear them. So lately, I started thinking about how I finally managed to dress in a way that truly suits me… and I decided to give you five tips on how to do so. Are you ready? Let’s get started!

  1. Don’t be scared of other people’s opinion.

This is a tough one for me, as I’m constantly dreading people’s disapproval on what I wear. However, nobody is going to be in your shoes, so you are the only one who’s responsible for your actions and your own happiness. Besides, there will ALWAYS be someone who will love your outfits and someone who will hate them; you can’t please everybody! All you can do is embrace your own tastes and wear whatever YOU love.

  1. Don’t go over-board.

Ok, so you’ve decided to buy whatever you like now, and that’s amazing! Don’t go too crazy on your next shopping trips though! Let me explain: about five years ago, I decided that my style was too “classic” and that I needed a more eccentric wardrobe. I went to my favorite stores and picked the most original outfits that I could possibly find, whether they looked good on me or not. All I wanted was to look original, I hadn’t thought this thing through. You need a balance between what you like and what matches your own personality and your body shape.

  1. Don’t hesitate to ask for the help of a professional.

For those of you who don’t know it, there are people whose job is to help you find your own style; these people are called Image Consultants. They can tell you which colors look good on you, how to dress according to your body type and how to define your own style. Contrary to what you might think, they don’t tell you what to do, they analyze your personality, your tastes and your needs in order to show you what would look great on you and what would help you feel more confident. You need a budget for this, but it is certainly worth looking into if you’re really interested in finding your own style and gaining more confidence.

  1. Be true to yourself.

This one goes hand in hand with tip number 2. Keep in mind that we are all different and that whatever looks good on your best friend might not look good on you. It doesn’t have anything to do with how beautiful you are, but it can depend on your skin tone, your hair color, your body type, your height, etc. And it’s ok, because you’ll always find something that will look amazing on you. You should also go for outfits that match your personality; don’t buy clothes just because they look pretty, but also because they make YOU feel pretty.

  1. Shop entire outfits, not single items.

It took me so long to come to the realization that buying single items doesn’t always work! What happens is that you fall in love with a sweater, you buy it, come back home and realize that you have nothing to wear it with. Now, what are you going to do? Either leave it to sit in your closet for the longest or go out again and look for a pair of pants, a purse and some shoes to wear it with (which is a hassle). Why not go to only one store and look for items that make a whole outfit? Oftentimes, stores even put items together and create an outfit, which can help a lot. What I would recommend would be to save some money until you can buy an entire new outfit. Alternatively, you could also take pictures of your closet with your phone and look at those pictures whenever you go shopping, so that you know if you have anything to wear your new item with.

Did you find my advice helpful? What are your personal tips on how to find your own style? Do share, I would love to know!
